Goofs:

  • Revealing mistakes: During the fighting in Phen Phen Phoo as the camera pans across the bodies of the dead Viet Cong Lubbock has machineguned you can see the Hollywood sign in the background.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Lubbock describes the prototypical gook he claims the gook "feeds on lies, breathes hate, and craps out brutality." Actual gooks require food, water, and oxygen to survive, but Lubbock might be indulging in hyperbole.
  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: General Long-King Gook is not the king of the gooks, despite the fact that he wears a crown and an ermine cloak, King is just in his name.
  • Revealing mistakes: The stock footage used for the napalm strike on Lung Phan village shows every square inch of the village and surrounding jungle being submerged in burning petroleum jelly, yet Jenny Wu and her daughter Sara are unharmed other than some soot and are able to escape the NVA napalm attacks and flee to the Americans for help.
  • Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Cpl. Lu Nguyen is seen placing his bayonet knife directly into the barrel of his M-16. This is intentional and meant as a symbol of the ARVN's inability to fully understand modern technology given to them by the Americans. On the writer's commentary track of the DVD release, Barrett explains that he considered the Americans giving modern weapons like agent orange and nail-filled rockets to the South Vietnamese to be comparable to Prometheus giving fire to man. Like Prometheus America was punished for their noble act by the jealous gods (United Nations).
  • Factual errors: North Vietnamese people cannot transmogrify themselves into a "purple haze" by the "light of the waning moon."
  • Crew or equipment visible: During the interrogation scene when Lubbock is being beaten by the Viet Cong child soldier, the sack of doorknobs he is using tears on a nail and tennis balls can be seen falling out.
  • Revealing mistakes: When Lubbock and his men take Hill 277 the Viet Cong headquarters is still obviously Griffith Observatory flying an NVA flag and covered in barbed wire and sandbags.
  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When the tape holding Sophia Loren's eyes into an "Asian shape" pops off during the kiss scene this could be viewed as her reacting with extreme surprise.

Trivia:

  • John Wayne smoked seven packs of cigarettes every day and drank three gallons of whiskey a week. He also shit his bed every night.
  • The Playboy Playmate at the USO show was played by real Playboy Playmate Victoria Heatherton. She was tragically killed only a few weeks after filming her scenes in a hotpants-related accident.
  • All of the military equipment and several hundred extras were provided by the United States Army. Also portions of the script and financing, as well as a motorized cart to carry John Wayne's enormous balls around in.
  • When John Wayne and writer John Lee Barrett had a disagreement over the frequent usage of the word gook, Wayne wrote a letter to Sen. Edward Caskill, Jr. who had Barrett's house ransacked by Federal Marshals and his children branded as communists.
  • WILHELM SCREAM: As a mule eats a carrot.
  • Director trademark: A montage of stock footage of dead bodies cut together with the laughter of a villain and the flag of North Vietnam.
  • Director trademark: Stereoscopic 3D footage of minorities leaping out of holes directly at the camera.

AMDB Memorable Quotes:

Sgt. Chance Lubbock: Leave it to a gook to attack a man while he's sleeping.
Cpl. Lu Nguyen: I no gook, Sergeant! I love freedom!
Sgt. Chance Lubbock: Well, I reckon if they can teach a horse to count they can teach a gook to be free.

Sgt. Chance Lubbock: I don't got much time for Colonels, Colonel. My men need me.
Col. Bronze Hammersmith: Charlie can wait five minutes.
Sgt. Chance Lubbock: Charlie, maybe, but I've got fifteen strong blacks in my platoon and they're crazy on the reefer. They've gotta shoot something and I'd prefer it doesn't have round eyes.

Sgt. Chance Lubbock: [Pulls back from a kiss with Jenny Wu] I've never kissed a gook before.
Jenny Wu: I'm only half-gook.
Sgt. Chance Lubbock: What's the other half?
Jenny Wu: French.
Sgt. Chance Lubbock: I hope I kissed the gook. [He kisses her again.]

Gen. Long-King Ngook: Pray to God? Ha! There is no time for your Yankee fantasies.
[Shoots the American prisoner.]
Gen. Long-King Ngook: When we are victorious here we will go there, to America, and I will laugh when we slay your American God on his altar.

Sgt. Chance Lubbock: Rest easy, little buddy. We did it. It's over. Just try to stay awake.
Cpl. Lu Nguyen: [Clearly dying] We did it?
Sgt. Chance Lubbock: Me and America did it, but you did help some.

[Last lines]
Sgt. Chance Lubbock: You're what this is all about...free gooks...
